Abstract

This case illustrates the process of developing a learning module to support BA students in their use of ICT (Information and Communication Technology) tools in their learning. At the university where this case occurred, the skill level of ICT use among students in a learning context was very heterogeneous. The E-learning Competency Centre, or ECC, which was in charge of techno-pedagogical development at the institution, created a hybrid learning module that offered students learning materials and activities with both face-to-face workshops and online tutorials for autonomous learning. The students were able to choose subjects they wanted to learn "à la carte" by taking tutorials on their own and/or by participating in face-to-face workshops. The module described in this case is currently under construction. The design phase of this project is the focus of this case study.

Author Biographies

Hervé Platteaux, University of Fribourg

Since 2001, Hervé Platteaux has worked as the educational head of the NTE Centre (New Technologies and Teaching) at the University of Fribourg. His main interests currently deal with Personal Learning Environments and transversal competences linked to the pedagogical use of Information and Communication Technologies in a university context. Beforehand, he worked for ten years in the field of educational technologies in the design and evaluation of interactive multimedia applications, especially for science culture centres and museums. These experiences led him to present a science education PhD thesis in 1999 at the University of Geneva where he compared printed book and hypertext by analysing the navigation paths made possible in these supports by their reading tools. Before his PhD, he obtained a Master in particle physics at the University of Geneva in 1991.

Sergio Hoein, University of Fribourg

Sergio Hoein works at the Centre NTE (New Technologies and Teaching) of the University of Fribourg (Switzerland) as a scientific collaborator. Among his tasks, he provides support for teachers using ICT tools (e.g. Learning Management System, online surveys, …), develops courses and course materials (e.g. placement tests, tutorial videos, etc.) and participates in projects about different elearning themes (e.g. evalguide, personal learning environment,…). His main interests gravitate around ICT for learning and teaching, learning autonomy and gamification. Before joining the Centre NTE, he completed a Master’s thesis in Educational Sciences at the University of Fribourg.
